What you should know about the effects of mold and mildew.

If you've ever cleaned out your refrigerator, you've seen some of the effects of mold and mildew. But the ability to change a half-eaten banana from last year from yellow to green is not the extent of mold's power. Mold actually produces tiny spores that can travel in the air to spread mold around your house and cause adverse health effects -- and even death in rare cases.

But don't get too frightened just yet. The most common effects of mold and mildew and their Mold Spores are more like hay fever. Just as in the spring, some people experience health effects from the increased amount of pollen in the air, some people experience a reaction from high levels of exposure to mold spores. Some people exposed to low levels can have Mold Allergies and react with a variety of the following symptoms: respiratory problems, such as wheezing, difficulty breathing, and shortness of breath; nasal and sinus congestion; eye irritation, including burning, watery, or reddened eyes; dry, hacking cough; nose or throat irritation and skin rashes or irritation.

Also, health experts indicate that depending on the type of mold present in a home, the amount and degree of exposure, and the health condition of the occupant, the health effects of mold and mildew can range from being insignificant to causing allergic reactions and illness. Pregnant women, infants, the elderly and those with health problems, such as respiratory disease or a weakened immune system, are more at risk when exposed to mold. Consult a medical professional and/or your local government health authority for guidance if you believe there is someone who may be at risk.
