What you should know about the harmful effects of mold sickness.

Many people suffer from mold sickness and have no idea what is causing their reaction. In many cases, different types of mold and toxic mold produce health effects through inflammation, allergy, or infection. Allergic reactions (often referred to as hay fever) are the most common following mold exposure.

Molds have the potential to cause health problems and mold sickness. Molds produce allergens (substances that can cause allergic reactions), irritants, and in some cases, potentially toxic substances (called mycotoxins). Inhaling or touching mold or Mold Spores may cause allergic reactions in sensitive individuals. Allergic responses include hay fever-type symptoms, such as sneezing, runny nose, red eyes, and skin rash.

Allergic reactions to mold are a common type of mold sickness. They can be immediate or delayed. Molds can also cause asthma attacks in people with asthma who are allergic to mold. In addition, mold exposure can irritate the eyes, skin, nose, throat, and lungs of both mold-allergic and non-allergic people. Symptoms of mold sickness other than the allergic and irritant types are not commonly reported as a result of inhaling mold.

Health experts indicate that depending on the type of mold present in a home, the amount and degree of exposure, and the health condition of the occupant, the level of mold sickness can range from being insignificant to causing allergic reactions and illness. Pregnant women, infants, the elderly and those with health problems, such as respiratory disease or a weakened immune system, are more at risk when exposed to mold.
